Credit fraud and the CBC News...

I saw this story on the CBC news last night about web sites that get people to buy stuff with credit cards but actually they just steal the person's credit info. They talked about a web site where you can get the information about where a site is hosted and by whom, but they never actually said what the site was. Anyone know what it was?

They might just mean a whois sight like whois.net

The problem is that most scam sites would have bogus info anyway.

this is as common as sand on the beach. What they are referring to are "phising" web sites where the name of a legitimate website may be slightly misspelled. A surfer types the wrong name by accident, winds up on the fake site and inputs his info which is then stolen.

There are also other types of fraud.... like freecreditreport.com

this is a legitimate business site, but it fools uneducated consumers into purchasing a plan to get a free credit report. Real free credit reports can be obtained once or twice a year from annualcreditreport.com

There are also phising attempts through spam mail....

so the bottom line is KNOW who you are dealing with and always check twice.
