I can play audio cd's, read cdrom's, and copy cd's in my burner. The device manager says everything is operational. However, my Roxio program times out after it starts to write the table of contents for my dvd. Movie Maker doesn't recongnize it as a recordable cd player. Everything worked fine until recently. I haven't downloaded any updates or anything and am very confused. My fan is making some annoying "ticking" vibration type sounds but is running. It is dust free. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I have tried pretty much all the "troubleshooting" advice; try a new cd, uninstall the burner, check connections, etc. and nothing seems to help.

CCleaner may help you. Once your temp folder is very full, sometimes burning programs fail.
Other than that, it may be a re-install of Roxio software
