32-bit zip app for DOS
Hi.
I am looking for a decent 32-bit zip application for DOS.(command line) I have a 16 bit one which works well, but the problem is that it cuts of the long file names because its only 16-bit. This is a problem when restoring the data cause none will work because it doesnt have the original file names. Can anyone help me or does anyone know of any utilities I can use? Regards Janes

Searching: 32-bit zip application for DOS in Google gave 327,000 hits
I'd say you will find one. If you're asking here for the best recommended (avoiding the come back here!) I'd still say check Google for the newest (first pages) matches

I dont know if you noticed but most of that hits is not zip archiving applications.
and these that are isnt working because its 16-bit. I have been in the industry for a long time. I know to search google first. The only usefull thing is pkzip but its also only 16-bit. I wouldnt ask here if I didnt try! Please anyone else no of something?

It's informative and gives links to other Dos programs I found it in Google! Also, I have an interest in what you are doing as well (or trying to do) So I'm happy for other replies too.

Well. I have been to that site. Have you tried downloading the application that site is about? Go ahead. I tried. If you get it right, I will apologise.
I am busy writing a batch file to handle all my backups. I take all the folders to be backed up and place it in one compressed file. Easier to copy. and less room for mistakes. The problem is because this is Pastel backups I need the file names to stay intact. But the 16-bit version replaces it with "~1" if its too long. Regards

Actually I love Dos (the forgotten system) and have had lots to do with it
I've made thousands of batch files (literally) and spent countless hours on getting one space or . or letter right. But I'll check why you can't download (without looking probably payment required) And edit in a comment here edit: Oh ok you got one!

no I didnt get one. Grrrrr.
Its just a unzipping tool. yeah the only decent one is pkzip but you have to buy it! So thats a no go.

Why are you using zip for compression? It provides inferior compression and far less features than decent command-line archivers like ARJ or RAR.
And if you are looking for a truly future-proof solution, then you should be using open software like tar and gzip.
