Vista Help Please

Hi, I am a novice when it comes to Vista. I purchased a floor model Sony Vaio from Staples. I am logged in Vista as the Administrator but I still have no access to any changes as far as networking goes. I keep getting the message that "this resource is currently in use" and I can't change ANY settings. Can anyone shed some light for me on what I need to do to get Vista security toned down a notch so I can set up my home network? Thanks in advance!!

It may be best to reload Vista (clean) that way you are not changeing any resources that are still in the process of being managed (possible code that is half completed- a web page? maybe)

The clean install option (for a floor model) would be best

Why do you have two threads going on the same subject?

So are you going ahead with backup all user data, and re-install Vista clean?

Not if I can avoid it. I haven't had time to mess with it today. I am going to try to change some settings first. I would rather figure it out in case I run into the same problem on someone else's computer. I'm sure there is a way. Thank you for the advise and i will post back when I get it figured out.

Hmm, well you're doing what I'd do, so I can't complain!

Please do let me know what you discover along the way. As this error does not have much info on it.
Server related? SQL? Who knows

Well it's been a while since I used the locked computer but I found the solution. I had to start the laptop in Safe mode, create a new account with administrative priveledges, restarted the computer, deleted the old limited user account but saved the data and everything now works the way it should....

Thanks for the update.

I've done this before, as well (even with old accounts)
I've removed the faulty user and saved all userdata, then put it all back to the right places (including email so forth)
Sometimes programs like Office do their reconfiguration, and sometimes AntiVirus software must be re-installed.

Actually the only real error, is sometimes programs don't un-install from Add/Remove programs, complaining that files don't exist (must have been in the old userprofile only)

But generally it's a really quick fix, and the computer usually runs better for it.
(ofcourse you could just leave the old account there, and not use it, but err.

True but why waste HD space on a laptop if you don't have to. I've had no issues at all. I finally got around to reading the Vista Bible and Vista Administrative Pocket Assistant. The more features I learned about in Vista the more I like it!
Take care!
