Hi, I have a PC (Dell XPS Gen 3) running Win XP that is experiencing intermittent blue screen errors. The user reports that they've been occuring overnight when the computer isn't in use. It's happening on average once every 2 weeks or so. We've tried the general troubleshooting steps in the "Before posting your minidumps, please read this" thread, including memtest (which didn't report any problems), but the blue screens are still occuring.

Would anyone here be able to take a look through these. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Three of your errors are 0x8E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which sometimes means a driver issue).

Two of the drivers cited were core Windows drivers. The other one was avg7rsxp.sys which is a driver for AVG anti-virus.

One was 0xD1 which means a driver was trying to access an IRQL that it had no business doing so. The driver cited is hap16v2k.sys which is a Creative driver.

The remianing error is an 0xA: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Typically due to a bad driver, or faulty or incompatible hardware or software. One driver was MpFirewall which is a driver for McAffee.

The driver cited is MpFirewall.sys which is of McAffee.

Suggestions and Questions:

1. Is your firewall a stand-alone or is it a part of McAffee Internet suit? If you have loaded McAfee internet suit that has anti-virus and AVG you will have issues that will lead to crashes. The rule of thimb is: one anti-virus and one firewall.

2. Have you gone to DELL's website and updated the latest drivers for your system? If not, do so and see if that brings stability.

3. Three out of the four errors have a possible hardware issues. I would run MemTest for a minimum of 7 passes on your RAM and if you get any errors then run the test on each stick to see if one or all needs to be replaced. Corrupted memory cannot be fixed, only replaced.
