Hi,

I bought an Asus A6U just over 2 years ago and am now becoming slightly frustrated by the speed of the Laptop. I upgraded the RAM on purchase to 1GB and im not sure of the full spec (im at work at the minute) I just wondered if anyone had any tips for speeding it up? Preferably cheap ones, though I may look at spending abit of cash if necessary.

Like I said, its an ASUS A6U with WinXP and an AMD processor (cant be sure which one till I get home)

Its at its most irritating when first starting up, when using the net (sometimes) and when downloading. (all of which I know can be down to several other factors. But if people have any ideas I'd appreciate them.

In many cases, slow starting and running of computers is caused by Antivirus and Internet Security programs (including Spyware programs)

What Antivirus program do you have?

Also you could download and run Startup Control Panel, and remove any unwanted startups happening

Note: there is nothing to purchase to speed up your computer. Even an extremely low spec computer (800Mhz 512Meg Ram) can be very fast on the Internet

My anti virus is AVG Free.

Im starting to have problems with my wireless connection also. Its disconnecting on a regular basis, but Im not losing the signal. Other laptops in the house stay connected but mine doesn't. So it seems there is something wrong with my adapter. Any ideas on what the life length is for wireless adapters or what the problem may be?

I've already run msconfig and reduced the start ups, but i still want to try and get it quicker......

The Startup program I linked above would have been better to run.

You can use the Msconfig Cleanup tool to get Msconfig back to normal.

Also, sometimes the amount of cache (temp files) that build up on users computer's can cause slowdowns, download and run CCleaner fully.

You may in fact have Malware on your computer, I find MalwareBytes to be quite good fo this:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Do you think I would be best restoring the start up options using msconfig and then running your suggested cleaner as well?

Wireless Setup Wizard Using A USB Flash Drive

Step 1:

Run this line in Start - Run field (copy/paste)

%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL NetSetup.cpl,@0,WNSW

Step 2:

Click <next>

Step 3:

"Set up a new wireless network" <next>

Step 4:

Create a network name (SSID) usually "company name" <next>

("automatically assign a network key")

(don't tick "use WPA encryption instead of WEP")

Step 5:

"Use a USB flash drive" <next>

Step 6:

Plug in your USB flash drive

(may have already been mounted)

Step 7:

Click <next>

Step 8:

Select your USB drive letter <next>

(Note: Check drive letter corresponds to your flash drive)

(Note: These files are created on your flash reader):

AUTORUN.inf

setupSNK.exe

SMRTNTKY (folder)

(~52kb in size)

Step 9:

(Do not click "Next" or "Cancel" Yet)

Remove the USB flash drive

Plug it into your wireless access point (wait 30seconds)

Remove the USB flash drive

Plug it into each PC to be added to the wireless network

Remove the USB flash drive

Plug the flash drive back into the original PC

Click <next>

Step 10:

Click <Finish>

(Note: tick "remove the files from the flash reader"


Note: running the wizard again enables adding to your network

I was talking more along the lines of wireless internet, my laptop keeps disconnecting from my router, but the signal strength stays strong.
