Internet Randomly Disconnects

I am on a desktop that is connected to a Linksys WRT54G router using a wired connection. I have AT&T ADSL. After an hour or so of use I am unable to browse the internet, use AIM, or anything of the sort. However, my local area connection status is still connected. The computer that is directly connected to the modem does not have any problems, along with the laptop that is connected to the router by a wireless connection. I have tried using the ipconfig /flushdns command, but it didn't work. The only method that has worked for me is restarting my computer. If you need more information I would be happy to provide it.

Update the firmware on the router? Get that from the Linksys site. If the update still doesn't work. Go and get yourself another router. Because you already tested a direct connection from the modem to the PC and it worked. But it doesn't work through the router.

So re-flash the router firmware and try it again. Still doesn't work then well replace the router or return back to where you got it from but you'll have to restore the original firmware state.

I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but the router works fine for Xbox Live (which is a wired connection).

This is a long shot, but run CCleaner and test again

Are you connected to the router via USB or Cat5 (ethernet)? If USB, check that power management isn't enabled on the USB ports in device manager and correct it, if necessary. A shot in the dark but I've seen strante things fixed because of it.

I'm connected via ethernet. Also, I've had the router for a couple of years and this problem kind of popped up out of nowhere. It happened around the same time that my video card started acting up (which still hasn't been resolved which leads me to believe that it's a problem with the hardware), but I don't see how the two could be related. I ran CCleaner and will let you know if it helps.

Actually excellent idea.

Because it was so good I looked it up, and guess what?

4 Port
Ethernet - 10 Mbps Twisted Pair (10BaseT)|Ethernet - 100 Mbps Two-Pair (100BaseTX)|Wireless Ethernet - 11 Mbps IEEE802.11b|Wireless Ethernet - 54 Mbps IEEE802.11g

Dang, no USB ! (But if it had, I'd say that would be it too)

What kind of motherboard are you using and, if present, are all the cooling fans "on the motherboard" spinning properly. Sounds like you might have a bit of a heat issue if they both started acting up at about the same time. Or your motherboard could be a bit glitchy. Check for bulging capacitors, ets. That's where I'd currently focus.

I am using an Intel 82865G\PE\P motherboard and all of the fans are spinning properly. The motherboard and video card are both about 3 years old. I've noticed the disconnects seem more frequent when I'm streaming videos or music. I tried the CCleaner to no avail.

Onboard NIC (network interface card) or PCI NIC? Which one are you using? If onboard you might want to switch to PCI NIC for better performance. Onboards one tend to fail more.

Ccleaner won't help you with networking problems, it's more for cleaning the junk out of the PC and fixing some registry problems. Always backup the registry before you start cleaning out the crap.

It's onboard NIC, which makes me think that a motherboard problem is starting to sound more logical. Could the power supply be the issue? It came with the case, which is also about 3 years old, so its quality is questionable.

PSU would shutdown the system if it was that.. Or in a few hours just turn itself off. have you experience anything like that? I have 2 systems I built with onboard NIC. One of them the packets were bad and taking forever to move 1x 300MB/s file from one PC to another is a dead giveaway should only take 20-25 seconds it was more like 150 mins. I had disabled one onboard in the BIOS and started using PCI 10/100. Problem gone. They had 10/100/1000/2000 NIC PCI support for XP/2003/Vista for only $10 bucks online now it gone back to $14 plus $5 for shipping. I should have jump on the $10 still comes out cheaper then rest online.

Replace the PSU with 400 to 500W, if you have a lot of devices then you might need more watts. 500watts is a lot though. 600, 800 1000 watts are available for PSU.

The problem seems to no longer affect this computer and is instead affecting the computer that is connected to the modem. It's as if it just transferred to another computer.

The problem went away all together for a couple of weeks, but now it has returned. Could it be a worm of some sort?

doubtful that the router is the issue, bu rather the WiFi or NIC drivers need updates.

Gaming will induce problems due to the cheap network equipment we use at home,
so don't expect perfection when gaming.
If the dropouts happen when just browsing, then it's a software issue.

If you want to check for infections
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
