Server spec v. hi spec workstation

Anyone like to venture an opinion about what a server in a small LAN of max 6 machines should contain that a decent or hi spec workstation does not have - other than perhaps a larged hard drive?
Any opinions most welcome!

Hi

I run a domain server, there are 2 hard wired PC's, 4 wireless laptops, and 1 media box.
Its spec is a HP XE310 with 1GHZ CPU and 256 meg of memory, it has been running for over 2 years and has never crashed or failed yet.
Over the time i have added HDD's upto 300GB in size.

I run azureus over night on it and it works fine.

I had a chat with someone on here who recommended Linux or Unix as a server, myself I run Windoze server 2000 but thats a personal choice.

Thanks for that - what is interesting is the spec you have used! I guess it is fast enough for general office duties?

The final equivocator is always the results

However, as the workload goes up, this box will starve the connected users due to
minimal cpu capacity and excessive paging (ie small memory).

Heck, I even have a 733mhz 512ram web server and it does ok -- until the workload gets excessive.

The real issue in sizing a server is

what services will be running to support the users?
will the users access resident applications on the server?
and what load will file services create?

I don't know the loads for this thing as it is a new office for a new business - I have built in a bit of future proofing with a Core 2 Due E8200 chip, 4 Gb of RAM and 2 x 500 Gb drives which I will mirror.
I haven't got the order yet so who knows??

Start with how are you going to use it?

Will you run a Domain Controller? DNS is usually added to that environment.
Will you run Ms Exchange Server for Email?
Will you run MsSQL Server?

With any of these, the 'server' takes on the properties of a File Server;
ie: Storage for common data files and perhaps shared programs.
