Try pressing F8 repeatively on Windows startup, until you see the Safe mode options screen

In that area you have "Last known good configuration" which you could try
If that doesn't work, try: "Safe Mode"

If you get in via Safe Mode
Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Syste-->Advanced- Settings (under Start and Recovery)
And then untick, "Automatic restart"
Apply OK OK

Then restart

Put the Xp CD in and boot from it
Go to the first R prompt
Select the Administrator account by pressing 1
Then select enter

Once on the recovery screen type:

chkdsk c: /r
(note: there is a space before the /r)

Once Check Disk has finished repairing any faults
Type exit to restart

Test again

So far normal

Well it is a tad extreme, but I'd continue until it finishes
If you feel this is taking too long (possibly already)
Then you could run Memtest on your Ram (7 passes or 4 hrs test required)
Or a Drive Diagnostics on your HardDrive.

It may also be beneficial to load cmos defaults, and remove all not required externals (mostly extra USB things plugged in).

Still normal

But the links I supplied are to create a bootable CD to test your Ram (and HardDrive)
But maybe just wait for cd to finish

Hmm

Well lets just say I've seen this before
And in about 1 out of every 3 the HardDrive fails on restart (So then...)

Maybe forget all that big stuff, and get the non replacable documents and things
(here we go 10 gig of personal pics no doubt!)

You may also receive a MiniDump in c:\windows\minidump folder that you can attach (for me to test)
But I already assume it's going to say bad memory (on HardDrive or Ram)
