First You Have to Promise Not to Laugh
I just bought a "screamer" of a video card, this Biostar GT8500 (yes that's a "5"); http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814141065
It's in my Gigabyte G-31, Intel e2200, 2GB RAM, 2 DVD burner + 2HDD machine. The comp is built in a Cooler Master "Centurion" RC541 case, a "MicroATX tower. This came with a "390 Watt PSU", this one; http://www.coolermaster.com/products...detail&id=3746 OK, here's the question. The video card is claiming only a 300 watt minimum PSU is necessary. This PSU is wired specifically for MATX, since it only has as many connections as are required for the case's drive bays (2 SATA). So, I'd like to continue using it, since an aftermarket PSU would have twice the amount of wires coming out of it, and the case is already a rat's nest. Plan "B" is to yank it, and install an Antec EA-380, (brand new spare), and start stuffing wires . What should I do? What would you do? Last edited by captaincranky; 07-07-2008 at 03:29 PM. |

Modular is indeed a very good answer. Go to http://www.tigerdirect.com. Lots of modular power supplies by Ultra, and the prices are good. Also, http://www. xoxide.com has a huge selection of power supplies.

That Cooler Master PSU is rubbish. Replace with a better PSU (preferably modular, as suggested above) ASAP to avoid an eMachines-like fried PSU + mobo scenario.

google psu calculator, and add 30% to the results. Then get a decent PSU.
