Translation / meaning

Can anyone tell me what all those obscure names actually mean - Ubuntu ; Hardy Heron ; Mandrake etc? Ive never used the os but am intrigued to learn what
the words stand for. (It took me some time to find out that Windows XP simply meant Windows 'experience' Win95 and 98 were self explanatory, as was Win2000
but I'm stumped to find the meaning of all those "flavours" of Linux...

Did you ever hear
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet
What does Lexus, Toyota, or Mercedes mean? -- only what the adverts tell you to believe.

Eloquent as always jobeard, but to the best of my knowledge, roses don't smell as "sweat"

Meanings

Thanks for the tip on Wikipedia - I deliberately don't use it as it's often so inaccurate, but no doubt for this purpose, it will be fine.
As the the "sweat" spelling, I was just beaten to the draw by Capt C. -- unless it
was a crafty joke!?
