IBM 90nm G5 chip to 'outrun' Prescott, Athlon 64

IBM's technically as yet unannounced PowerPC 970FX has won the Microprocessor Report Analysts' Choice Award for Best Desktop Processor. And according to MR editor-in-chief Peter Glaskowsky, Intel and AMD had better watch out.

The 970FX is the 90nm die-shrink of the original 130nm PowerPC 970, launched back in October 2002 and finally shipped last summer, most notably inside Apple's Power Mac G5.
IBM is expected to launch the 970FX formally next week at the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), along with its PowerTune technology, which adds SpeedStep-style clock frequency scaling that can synchronise across multiple processors.

Well there still hasn't been a real review of the 2GHZ G5. It's supposed to crush everything in its path ( including Opteron ) especially in SMP mode but Apple has never sent a machine to any reviewer whatsoever, yet it's keeping its claims.

I believe they were forced to stop their campaigns in the UK claiming to be the fastest personal computer available.

well, I like most end users, stick with what they know by word of mouth. Until somebody tells me it's better, I'm sticking with AMD. It's the safest option!

until they have proof that it is the fastest im sticking with pc's as well. and mac's dont have many good games for them. so what are they going to be faster for? word processing and buisness apps? " i can save my payroll program faster than you!" my school has a g4 i believe and it was supposed to be blazing fast. but my computer runs adobe photoshop faster.
