i think i did something wrong---when you said it should go to C, what did you mean? It had been sitting at that screen for several minutes, I hit the letter C and enter, and it said it was an invalid entry or something along the lines of that. I eventually just hit enter, and it then said it was checking my disc for consistency.
it then rebooted like has been doing.
I am now reloading the floppy discs.

when i "R" to start the recovery console, it brings up a page that looks like this:

Quote:
Microsoft Windows XP(TM) Recovery Console

The Recovery console provides system repair and recovery functionality.

Type EXIT to quit the recovery console and restart the computer.

?: H:\MiniNT (i don't know what character the ? is, its off the screen)

Which Windows installation would you like to log onto
<to cancel, press enter>?

I have left it sitting for about ten minutes... what should i enter?

is it possible that it wont ask me?
it has told me before to enter a valid number, when i tried "C", so i entered 1 and hit enter.
it now has
? (cant see it stil):\MiniNT>

is it possible that I am at the recovery console command prompt, without having the admin password question?
should I enter the lines the link told me to?

Hmm only other thing I can think of is my be your ram went bad

download memtest from the link below burn it onto a cd then boot off of it.

http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.4a.iso.zip

let it run for at least 7 passes

i cant get it to boot off memtest. i used f2 to change the boot order to cd rom first, and also have tried using f10 to choose boot cd first. i can hear it reading the cd, but then it just goes on like it normally would if you left a regular music cd in....
does it matter that i downloaded memtest with vista, and not xp? becuase i could try again with a pc with xp...

i edited the boot order so that it went cd rom, cd rom, cd rom, harddrive.
no luck in three tries.
i edited it so that it went cd, cd,cd,cd, and it finally booted the disc. its scanning right now.

xxdanielxx I haven't even read the thread in full
Now, I know instead of this message, I could have!

But maybe after the Mem Scan, there can be a write up of

What is the current fault
What has been tried
Any other further info

In a few lines!
This thread is just too big!
