I currently have a fairly old comp im wanting to upgrade for alittle bit of better gaming experience.

some specs = celeron(r) 3.07GHz processor
512ram pc3200 ddr 400MHz
SiS661fx graphics


I recently ordered 2 1gig pc3200 ddr 400MHz to carry alil more load. Will they pose any known problems I should be aware of? Also is it worth the trouble of doing minor overclocking to that processor... or just a waste of time?

That RAM should help quite a bit, but really your onboard graphics are what is really hurting you on gaming. What type of games are you playing (or wanting to play) and at what resolution?

If you can answer those 2 questions then we can tell you if it is feasible or not to make that system do it. Do you have a PCIe slot? What about AGP? If you only have regular PCI slots there is a thread at the top of the Audio/Video forum about PCI and gaming, but you are really limited there. AGP expands you some more, and PCIe opens up a whole new world, but you wouldn't want to put a real high end card in that system because your processor would limit your performance. So we need to find a balance.

You could overclock, but I wouldn't even bother unless we get you in a game where you are just a few frames per second away from being able to enjoy it.

One of the games im playing is a online drag racing game... but i always turn the graphics all the way down (just a simple flash game). But in drag racing r/t is everything :P so the few fps could make a huge difference or nothing at all.. As far as the other game its a mmorpg. It as well has different graphics setting which i usually play on lowest setting.

The mmorpg min system requires for high definition version as following..

1.5ghz processor+
256mb ram+
64mb 3d graphics card+

As far as the drag racing game thats flash based.. I cant find any system requires at this time.


To the 2nd portion of your post.. few months ago i tryd tryd swithcing out my vid card with i believe g-force 6200? .. and i believe it was pci. Long story short my comp wouldnt recognize the new graphics card so i had to put the old one back in.

Well, a Celeron 3Ghz should be able to handle flash just fine. Are your drivers for your on board graphics updated? It might be worth finding the drivers for it, downloading them, then going into your Device Manager and deleting your graphics card, then rebooting. After you reboot, then install the drivers you just downloaded, reboot again, then try the games.

Your hardware is plenty good to not have any problems playing a flash game (unless maybe you are full screening it) and that mmorpg (that shouldn't be affected by fullscreening near as much as the flash game).

should be fine as long as you dont get more than 4 gigs seeing as though xp only utilities around 3.5 gig
