Problems with external hdd

hi,

i have got a philips 500gb external usb hdd (NTFS); and a few probs!

Firstly, if i leave the hdd on my computer stops at the boot screen :(
secondly, everytime i turn the hdd on it says "this device could perform faster through a usb 2.0 port"

my mobo - asus p5k
my os - windows xp pro sp2

Please help, i would appreciate it! :)

Have you tried the hdd on a few different USB ports on the machine? If so, please let us know what else you have done to try to solve the problem.
