Ok, so I bought a new computer about a week ago and it ran perfect for like 2 days, then I put a video card I already had into it and it seems to BS randomly with the error DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and I can't seem to fix the problem, I've reinstalled the drivers to the card a couple times and it doesn't seem to work. I have an factory overclocked XFX 8800 GT inside this computer.

The .dmp files were too big to post on these forums so I just uploaded them elsewhere, they are the last three that I've gotten.

I don't really know what the problem is. I'm just amazed that they put in a 300W power supply with those specs .... and now you're trying to put in a XFX 8800 GT in the same computer with the same power supply? Just seems a tad unreasonable to me .... hopefully someone else on here knows a bit more about the problem ....

A driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state. Typically occurs during events that involve power state transitions, such as shutting down, or moving into or out of standby or hibernate mode.


Have you tried zipping the minidump files? The compression allows you to attach otherwise large files. You can do this up to 5 files per zip.

All your errors are the same as above 0x9F and they all cite disk.sys which belongs to the process PnP Disk Driver which belongs to your Vista OS.

A lot of people have issues with the hibernate mode with this OS but there is no single answer to your problem as a whole. I suggest going to the Vista forums and see what they have concerning this issue.

That's weird because it seems to do it randomly even when I'm in the middle of something where it shouldn't be going into hibernation... I will check the vista forums tho, thanks for your help.

ok, so I figured out what it was. For some reason my external hard drive was to blame. I don't know how but I've unplugged it and it's been fine ever since. It's a Maxtor 750 GB OneTouch 4 Plus, model number stm307504ota3e5-rk.
If you wanna know anything else just let me know, and thanks a lot to route44 for your help.

Have you run any diagnostics on your external hd? With your error code I am wondering if the power transition failure is within the Maxtor itself, i.e. transitioning between your external hd and your system itself.

No I haven't. What weird is that my roommate has used this harddrive with the same version of windows and he's never had a problem.
