Comctl32.dll Error

I have ggogled this error but nothing compares to what i have on my laptop..

problem started after linking laptop to desktop pc.
i experienced a pciidex.sys error with the BSOD....

used the recovery console to repair the said file...
laptop gets as far as bootup to the windows desktop but no icons and gives me the errors
"windows explorer error"
and
dr watson postmortem debugging error"

tried renaming the comctl32.dll file said it wasnt found...
changed directory to sys32 and file was found and deleted.

recovery console said it found and fixed several errors, but, i now get winlogon.exe unable to locate component because comctl32.dll was not found...

can anyone help ..??

How did you "link" them? Laptop to Desktop linked by Ethernet cable?

they were linked using spare socket on main pc using vga cable...

that then gave me the pciidex.sys error on the BSOD..

however, i used the recovery console to sort that problem..
then all i was getting was the desktop with no icons...
and the errors as reported in 1st post..

i now get winlogon.exe unable to locate component because comctl32.dll was not found...

tried recovery console again to no avail...!!
dont want to format as i need to recover data from the hard drive...
namely family fotos but other important stuff too

any advice appreciated greatly

Install your OS to a new drive, properly jumpered.
Use this old drive in an external USB Enclosure, then recover all your data after the new drive is installed and is properly working.
Cost is $80 for both drive and enclosure, but your data and your time are probably worth that.
