So my computer has been slightly dodgy recently when you turn it off because when you turn it on sometimes the monitor says there's no signal and it just sits there on standby even though the computer seems alive and well - hard drive noises lights on keyboard etc etc.

Anyway now it seems to have completely given up the ghost.

the monitor will just not detect any signal from it at all.

I've tried a different monitor and it still doesn't work (CRT and flatscreen)
I've plugged in an older computer to see whether its the lead I'm using (it isn't)

I'm guessing this is a graphics card problem.

my computer is:

Intel Q6600 2.4ghz
Ati x1900xtx 512 PCI-E
2 gb ram
Asus P5B-VM SE motherboard.

Any ideas what to do?

Try unplugging your graphics card from your motherboard and see if it runs on the onboard video.

Thanks for the response spyder - I'll try that.

I should also mention that someone came in when I was out and flicked the power switch on the PSU off without shutting down etc before this happened and it hasn't worked since.

It was already being a bit weird but now it straight up won't work. I'm wondering if this is known to cause problems like this in particular.

It could also be a power supply issue. Weak or dying PSU's can cause all kinds of strange behavior. Your 1900xtx may have not been getting sufficient power which would explain the loss of video signal, that card draws a lot of power.

It may have been the graphics card or the PSU before but when the PSU was shut off in that manner it may have damaged something else like the motherboard. So you might have more than your original problem.
