Reading 128mb ram but it is actually a 256mb ram

Hi, I have a Dell Latitude LS H400ST with PentiumIII 398mhz processor. It came originally with 128mb ram and a 6 gb Harddrive. I just bought a 256mb ram stick and installed it, but it is still only reading 128 ram, and it is acting the same as always. Please help, I contacted Dell and they said it will only run 128mb but they offer a 256mb stick for MY computer (Based on my Service Tag). I need help.

Well yeah could be a BIOS limitation, or a bad stick. That happened to me, I bought a 512MB stick and was reading 256MB only. Turned out I had to RMA it :-(

If you can, try it out on another PC

128 might be the max the motherboard can handle

You need to purchase 'low density' memory, and your best bet is a dual rank module.

It looks like this:
