Hi fresh,
so do you have the Phenom II 955 (as in the title of your thread) or the x2 550 castillo in your list?

Fresh
if its the x2 550 BE you have Oc'ing can be a rather simple affair with an unlocked multiplier which is the preferred way of doing it anyway. and the latest round of amd phenom II's x2 and x3's BE editions are not real fond of having their FSB moved very much.
you wont be able to unlock the other cores as your MSI K9A2 is equipped with the 600SB, the 750 SB is needed to access the 'Advanced Clock Control' feature needed to attempt the revival of the muted cores. here is an article from Toms Hardware about unlocking cores in the Phenom II:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...m-ii,2273.html
if you do not wish to OC via your bios, AMD has its own (in my opinion) rather excellent OC'ing software called AMD Overdrive, it can be had here:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_overdrive.aspx

Here is a review of the x2 550 that has some OC tips for your CPU

http://www.overclockersclub.com/revi...thlon2x2/3.htm

one last thing, if you have not overclocked before, do yourself a favor and do a bit of reading up on it and the potential risks to your hardware. this article is a bit dated, but the same principles apply.

Good luck, let me know if i can help

Thats been the most common result reported with the x2 550, it will get to3.8- 3.9 Ghz, but just wont get over the 4.0 mark. if you got 4Ghz stable out of yours, your doing very well .

you said its running stable at 3798? that's as good as any of the sites that reviewed and benchmarked it have been able to do...i think that's probably the limit. and 29c is a great temp at idle for that OC.

you're not going to get higher than 3.8 on air, well you could, but you'd kill your cpu from the heat, You have to move on to better means of convection if you're going to go for 4ghz.

Hi Fresh,
here is a review of your chip on legit reviews, I don't know much about this site, but this guy claims that he got his x2 550 stable at 4085Mhz,with a 19x multiplier on air......im kind of suspicious of that and his CPUZ screen shots don't show the Vcore he was using doing it. he may have just gotten one of the 'good ones' but the word on this chip is that it takes 1.7v to get to 4Ghz ( way over the recommended Vcore limit) Im with Super on this one. this chip has had the characteristic of hitting the wall at 3.8, and then getting hot, and taking a disproportionate amount of voltage to get the last 200Mhz. anyway, here is the link to the review, it may give you some insight.

so i did , here it is...
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/981/1/
that's a loaded question fresh, remember a computer is a weakest link scenario, it will only run as fast as the slowest component. that's why Overclocking can be such a lengthy and painstaking process. it can be any of the following:

Northbridge Frequency
memory speed/voltage
southbridge speed
temperature
vcore
bus speed etc etc. or that may be all the thing has in it. like i said ,that processor has a characteristic of hitting the wall at 3.8Ghz. it may help to read this article on the basics of OC'ing. its really an incremental process when your pushing a cpu(or any component) to the limit as you are attempting.

i don't think its that fresh, I think you should first go get a superior cooling solution, the Zalman cooler you have is rather mediocre. then you could try these settings and see if it gets you close to 3.9Ghz. if not, start inching up the Vcore .02v at a time....and watch your temps!

* CPU voltage of 1.425V
* CPU multiplier of x19
* RAM multiplier of x8
* Base clock of 202MHz
* CPU-NB voltage 0.1V higher
* CPU-NB multiplier of x12
* HTT multiplier of x12
I believe that max Vcore (for OC )is 1.55v (verify that) so you have some to work with.

This one would do a great job for you, all the reviews on it are great, and its rather economical
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233003

also the OCZ vendetta or Vendetta II is very good, i have one on this thing (AMD X3 720) i have it OC from 2.8Ghz to 3.8Ghz idles at 24c and load at 35c.

Just remember that heat is your cpu killer, not necesarily the vcore. That's why the records with 1.7volts vcore happen, but they use extreme measures of cooling, like liquid nitrogen, passed that is liquid helium. Electricity is a strong form of energy, and the energy has to go somewhere, no moving parts makes it a little more difficult. I have seen reviews with your cpu oc'd to 4ghz+, but the 1.6volts you need is above the norm and definately decreases the life of your cpu. You could set 1.6vcore and try 4ghz, I'm sure it will boot, but just remember you need a better way to remove the heat.

to add to what super just said, AMD and the AMD overclock 'guru's' have set the max OC voltage on the new processors at 1.55v. to confirm this you can download AMD overdrive 3.02 and the max vcore will be at the top of the vcore adjustment. http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_overdrive.aspx
