Visual artifacts when gaming issue

I've been having a problem in which when I run a game (any game) i start to get graphical glitches (flashing textures, coloured dots appearing randomly etc). These build up and eventually the game freezes and the sound loops!

When I run "dxdiag" and click on Display Tab ,it says:
" Hardware accelerated Direct3D 9+ is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer. "

OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
Display adapter: Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ (2CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Directx version: 9.0c
Memmory: 1024 MB RAM

I thought Direct3D 9+ would only work with XP SP3...
