Fedora Core 2 is now available from Red Hat and at distinguished mirror sites near you, and is also available in the torrent. Fedora Core has expanded in this release to four binary ISO images and four source ISO images, and is available for both x86-64 and i386. Please file bugs via Bugzilla, Product Fedora Core, Version 2, so that they are noticed and appropriately classified. Discuss this release on fedora-list.

Actually, the first I noticed was when it appeared on my all time favourite FTP server, but I did know it was due today. If you want to check out what, IMHO, is the best thing to happen to Linux in ages take a look here.

There's also a DVD version available. I'll try to find a link for those who have DVD burners & wish to try it out.

I'm 3/4 of the way through disk 2 right now. Then 3 and 4 to go, but 4 isn't the full 650MB its just 150MB or so.

I guess it probably takes about 7-8 hours for me to download the whole thing.

Once I have that, and have upgraded my Linux box to Core 2, I will probably grap the torrent of the DVD image. That .iso wasn't available on the FTP server I have started to download from, and I might as well start what I've finished. But man - in the days of multiple disks for Linux OS install, thank the Lord for bootable DVDs! You need to grab that, definately.

So far reviews are very good and indicate that its an improvement on Core 1 in many ways.

Some issues here for nVidia users:

The fast version: the Nvidia driver will NOT work with FC2's kernel because of the 4KSTACKS problem. Unfortunately, FC2's kernel no longer has the config option to disable this new "feature", so you will need to :

- recompile a new kernel (i.e. a stock kernel). For example, 2.6.5-bk2, or 2.6.6-bk4

- make sure to use Fedora's own config files (from /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-1.358/configs), and turn off the options CONFIG_4KSTACKS and CONFIG_REGPARM

This does NOT mean that you can't use an nVidia card with this OS, it means that a small tweak is required to use the special nVidia Linux driver. nVidia will of course release some kind of a fix in due course.

Read this if you are using nVidia drivers and Fedora Core 2:

Based on comments from this forum I have made the following changes

I downloaded the latest 2.6.5-rc3-bk1 kernel sources from kernel.org.
( 2.6.4 + patch-2.6.5-rc3 + patch-2.6.5-rc3-bk1 )

I configured the kernel such that the parameters
CONFIG_4STACKS = n ( no )
and
CONFIG_REGPARMS = n ( no )

I then built and installed the 2.6.5-rc3-bk1 kernel.

The system came up with the 2.6.5-rc3-bk1 kernel

I next edited /boot/grub/grub.conf and set default=0
so that the 2.6.5-rc3-bk1 kernel is selected as the default.

Next I ran the NVIDIA build script

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run

After the script completed , I edited XF86Config and changed the
video driver from nv to nvidia.

I also edited /etc/inittab and set the start up option from
3 ( command line )
to 5 ( Xwindows )

Finally I rebooted the system , and Fedora Core 2 Test 2 came up
running the 2.6.5-rc3-bk1 kernel , with the NVIDIA driver and Xwindows/
GNOME desktop.

In short the 2.6.3 kernel shipped with the latest Fedora Core 2 Test 2
beta ISO install disk set is not compatible with the NVIDIA 5336 driver.

The problem can be solved , by building a NON red hat 2.6.x kernel from
source and setting
CONFIG-4STACKS=n
and
CONFIG_REGPARM=n
