More on the PS3 Slim: 250GB model already planned

Sony finally took the wraps off the much-rumored PS3 Slim yesterday and gave it the more affordable $299 price tag consumers had been clamoring for. The new 120GB unit is smaller, lighter, and packs “all the same features” of older models (with the exception of Linux support) while consuming 34 percent less power. It is also a bit quieter than its predecessors, which is good news for people using the console as a Blu-ray player.

typo: "The new 120GB unit it's smaller" -> "is smaller"

If you're tempted to get one now is the time, the older models are just as good and is even slicker than this one. So go get yours now and not worry about a 250 gig slim, they all have the ability to upgrade hard drives to whatever sizes you want as long as it's a 5400 rpm.

BTW, the older models are tried and proven to be reliable, durable and darn sexy, so getting one is a steal being the same price tag is on them $299

You cant lose off this deal, which ever you get.

"We’re not quite sure why anyone would buy the bulkier and less capacious 80GB console when they can wait a few weeks for the Slim to arrive at the same price."
Because the fat ps3 looks better than the slim one, and the current model's architecture has been proven. As with any new technology, the first batch of slims may still have some issues. Also, you cannot install Linux on the slim, but the fat gets to keep that feature.
Granted, my first point is debatable (depending on your taste), but after reading many comments on various forums, a lot of people feel the same about the fat being more aesthetically pleasing.

I'm surprised they didn't come out with a 250gb sooner. The cost of storage is so cheap now it's ridiculous. I upgraded mine to a 320gb for less than $100. The new design may grow on me, but I doubt it. It looks too much like the ps1 meets car stereo amp.

I find it amusing that although the height and width are smaller, it is actually deeper than the original.

I agree with the size
Actually when I first heard about the "slim" PS3 I asked myself; why?
I mean isn't the first design of the PS3 just awsome as it is?
No meaning to make it smaller IMO, just improve the internal components, reducing the thermal output should allow the bigger PS3 to become more quiet than the slim PS3 due to it's bigger case that should allow more airflow with lower noise levels?

The older model noise is almost non-existent, I dont understand what's up about the noise, you'll only hear it if your tv is muted. It's no big a deal.

I just got back from walmart, and I now know where sony got the design from. They stole it from a $29 budget priced dvd player.

Why is everyone so stuck on asthetics of the ps3, seriously, its a ps3, NOT YOUR WIFE. They're making it cheaper, thin and with the same features. Its not even that different from the original, same general shape, just smaller. They're both ugly anyway, but who cares. I'm definately getting one of these thin versions.

The current PS3 looks like a breville. It looks like the top should flip open so you can lay 2 pieces of buttered toast, an egg and some bacon in it, close the lid and 5 minutes later.. mmm tasty snack.
Always thought it looked ugly. The slim one looks alot less ridiculous for the sake of it. I just wish they had made the top flat instead of keeping the silly curve that means I cant put a bottle of coke on it without risking spillage.. :)

If you use your PS3 for streaming movies and a few games there really is no reason for a larger hard drive. I have the original 40GB and its way more than big enough.

You guys are just hating. "That's the best you can do!?" Now that the price is way ridiculous for a power house gaming rig and blu-ray player; among other things, you continue to hate?

This $299 made you all realize how much M$ is sucking you all dry, and whoring you out with their X-rated dvd riddle with failures gaming box.

You're all juveniles, with your "Fox cant get the grape then call it sour" comments and attitudes, and for those of you faking to own a PS3, yet your comments are totally negative; at least have the guts to come straight and not disguise yourselves, because you look like hypocrites.

Same goes for the Nintendo ***people*** as well.

And the flames of Guest continue to roar. Why don't you stop hiding under an anonymous veil, or are you scared? For the record, I own an 80gb PS3.

wii and 360 owner here(and ps2 although its not been used in a while). ill get a ps3 when the price drops and an essential game comes out that I want to play. either that or the online gets better than the the 360 so i start buying online games on ps3 instead.
Cant say fairer than that.

lol. You took the words right out of my mouth. I will upgrade the drive on mine soon also since they have come down so much in price. The original PS3 looks so much better than this new one as far as I can tell. The polished finish and chrome trim make it look awesome with my Onkyo system and HDTV. it catches peoples' eyes all the time and ends up being a conversation piece. The 360 looks terrible by comparison.

I got the first 80gig, and the only time it gets loud is when its been on for a long time or it is really hot in the house. but still, when the fan kicks it up a notch its still a quieter console than the 360 is with the fans on low.
I think it looks much better than the 360 also, but the slim should have come with the same transparent black case. I hate the look of flat black textured plastic on electronics.
I dont think it looks horrible though and Ill probably end up with a 120 gig for the bedroom so that I can now watch my blu-rays in both rooms and even play games in both.

Principally speaking, the bigger the hardware, the better the performance. so getting the slim with less power means less performance, prepare for game lags noticable to extreme gamers.
