Toshiba Laptop Weird Stuttering
I have bought a Toshiba Satellite A300-23J laptop 2 weeks ago. I have been using it with no problems. But today some strange things are happening. When watching movies, listening music and specially when playing games(even browser based flash games), my computer suddenly freezes for 1-2 sec and sound stutters. Sometimes it happens rarely, sometimes frequent. I use everest and my GPU and CPU temperatures are usually between 45-55 celcius while i'm not playing a game. And about 60 when playing. I don't think those values are abnormal, but i'm a bit obsessed. What can be causing this? What can i do? I recently updated my sound card drivers but it has been 3 days maybe. I made a chkdisk scan and no disc problems at all.
Waiting for your answers. Thanks. Last edited by thunderbolt; 08-22-2009 at 12:54 PM.. |

Those temps are high butnot to the extreme (accptable I guess).
You could try using acooling pad or nlow compressed air through it to keep it running efficient. Try running a memtest http://www.memtest.org/ or even performing the 8-step virus/malware removal, you may have malware. You can even try checking your HDD to make sure that isn't corrupt, http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...loads/seatools |

Thanks for the answer. Looks like i solved the problem, there was too much processes running in background. I removed those from startup. Now I don't experience this problem but i had a weird polygon chaos while playing anno 1404 and GRID for once. I reinstalled stock display drivers. I hope it's because of drivers.

Try running a scan with HijackThis! and post log. Maybe we can find more processes to eliminate.

Modded drivers make freeze. I will not ever buy a pc with ATI gpu after this bullshit. |

I can't post my HijackThis! log. I don't know why it happens. Anyways, I am getting a more serious problem now. Stuttering has gone but now I see artefacts after a while when I'm playing 3D games. Sometimes approx. after 5 mins. Sometimes rarely, sometimes frequently. Sometimes checkerboars like colored squares appear. After that all polygons get in a chaos and i see lots of long lines on screen. Sometimes computer freezes until i power off. I tried 4 different display drivers but no solution(2 toshiba's, 2 mobility modded ati drivers). I also did a hard drive recovery. That's so annoying. Right now i'm about to go on a trip and I won't be able to bring my computer to technical service for some while. Is it a serious problem that needs a hardware operation? Or are there any solutions you can think of?
Edit: My post arrived here after some while. I always get artefacts after some time. (About 1 hour after boot.) If i send my pc to technical service, they'll look and just say it's working. Yea its working perfectly if you don't play 3d games and don't play a game more than 1 hour. It's interesting that getting artifacts after some while. I suspect fan may not be working. Everest only show cpu fan. I dunno if my lappy has gpu fan or not. Probably passive cooling. Help pls. And about that freezing thing. Now I'm perfectly sure that game is freezing because of multipile keystrokes. When it freezes i get my hand off keys and game continues. It may be the internal keyboard is a ps/2 keyboard. I own a fairly old Toshiba laptop and I can confirm that multiple keystrokes can be an issue!! During the last 3 weeks my laptop froze 2 times only to give me the weird "TRAP EXCEPTION C0000005" error on reboot. Both times have something in common. First time my wife wiped the dust off of it while it was running, hence multiple keypresses. Second time my nephew used his feet on the keyboard which of course resulted in multiple keypresses.
Weird, isn't it! Artefacts you get after a while definitely have something to do with your graphic card. Most likely the chip is getting too hot. 1. Make sure the ventilators are running. 2. Always place your laptop on hard surfaces not to block the hot air. 3. Are you sure you haven't bumped up the GPU speed and/or its dedicated memory. 4. Maybe the heat dissipation is poorly resolved. Try to UNDERclock your GPU using RivaTuner to lower the temperature. Thats all I can suggest you. Best of luck! |

1) I guess my fans are working fine. While playing game, it speeds up and i can hear its voice get loud.
2) I always place my laptop on cooler. 3) I don't know what you mean by bumping up, but I'm sure that I'm not using any overclocking software. That's the point it gets interesting. I'm not overlocking but I'm getting artifacts. I look my gpu and memory stats with everest and they are always a bit below their default clock. 4) Riva Tuner does not support my drivers. I get a message like this at riva tuners startup. I don't want to mess with power user things, and ATItool crashes when I run as admin. So I can't change my clocks. I don't even want to mess with them because if I completely blow up my gpu, I would lose my warranty rights. But underclocking may not be harm for my computer though. Finally, I used my laptop perfectly stable 2 weeks after I bought it. This issue makes me think I have a hardware problem.(Like burning some parts of gpu.) Thanks for your interest! Edit: Looks like underclocking doesn't make any change. I use powerplay and it underclocks GPU by %50. When I underclock, my gpu temp does not go farther than 60-65. But while playing a game, i can only play for 3-5 mins and than my screen just fills with red-green squares. It doesn't make any change. I'll just give it to repair after I come from my holiday trip.
