Reformatted HD, laptop has issues

I popped in my WinXP pro disk and redid my laptop yesterday. Got all the drivers for my model (Inspiron 9300) right from the Dell site, plugged in my service tag to get the exact stuff, but when I installed, some didnt work. Not sure what to do next.
"Local Area Connection is unplugged" - message I get in the taskbar.
Device Manager...got a bunch of those little yellow question marks next to:
other devices
network controller
pci device
pci modem
video controller (vga compatible)
I also have a little yellow ex. point next to one of my USB hubs, I assume thats where I plugged in my Cruzer to copy files I got off my desktop?
Next step? Thanks for the help!

I should mention that I am running thru a router. The cable modem is run into the router, router cable to the desktop, then wireless connection to the laptop.
Can I run the cable from the modem directly to the laptop, get on the 'net, and fix things that way?
