Defence Department Hacker Nicked

You wonder why this kind of thing happens. You care enough about computers, and are interested enough in them, to learn how to do wonderful things like defeat complex security, and then you use that to destroy. Further, the thing you choose to destroy is something you know will land you in jail, and with a court order that you never touch a computer again for 10 years. I mean... why?

"A 20 year old Californian man has been formally charged with hacking US Defense Department computers and defacing government Web sites.

Robert Lyttle was charged with hacking government computers in April 2002. According to court papers seen by Reuters, Lyttle got into the Department of Defense's Defense Logistic Information Service and Office of Health Affairs and NASA's Ames Research Center.

If found guilty he could face 10 years inside and fines of up to $250,000.

That's a hefty fine, 1/4 of a million dollars... Something tells me this guy yprobably isn't strong enough to hold off inmates by himself. Maybe he'll upload a virus to their cells, lol.
