Microsoft lets users block SP2 via automatic updates

Realising that not everyone out there wants to download and install SP2 automatically, Microsoft have made it possible for companies to temporarily block SP2 through automatic update and thusly avoid installing the new service pack.

The move is prompted by a series of concerns about compatibility problems with SP2 that certain machines might suffer. Therefore, users can download a tool, posted on Microsoft's web site, which can block download and installation of SP2 through automatic updates.

"There are application compatibility consequences and we want to make sure customers are aware of those within their environment before they upgrade." - Barry Goffe, Group Manager in Microsoft's Windows client unit.
