IBM to release Linux Power servers

IBM has unveiled its OpenPower line of servers, based on the Power5 processor and running Linux, as part of the company's commitment to promoting the OS on their enterprise systems.

Four way rack and tower set-ups with up to 64 GB of RAM will come with either 1.5GHz or 1.65GHz Power5 microprocessors. They will use SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and Red Hat's Enterprise Linux AS 3 Update 3 as their OS, and are intended to compete with Sun's lower-end Unix servers based on the UltraSparc processor. The servers will begin shipping on September 24th, and will be priced at $5,000 and up.
