Inactive Constant redirects, win32 errors, and sound malfunctions?

Hello all, this is my first post and I'm still learning the ropes.

About a week or two ago, my computer caught some wicked malware that was masquerading as legitimate anti-virus software. Except that it wouldn't let me run system restore, spybot S&D, symantec anti-virus, or connect to the internet. Luckily, I remembered the magic of Safe Mode, ran Spybot, and removed the pests.

Since then, however, I still keep getting redirected when I click on links I searched for. There is ALWAYS either a blue squiggly or a green globe before it redirects me. Sometimes I get a Facebook ad, and sometimes I get a message claiming that registry errors were detected, I should download X program. I'm not buying it!

Further, after a while of running my computer, I get a generic win32 error. This causes my computer to briefly change into Windows Classic theme instead of my XP theme. It quickly resolves, but after a while more I find that none of my sound works, and eventually the internet stops working. Restarting is successful, if only for a while.

I have run SpyBot, Avira, and Malware Bytes, and Symantec, and they find nothing. I am posting here as a last resort. Any help you can offer would be SO welcome.

Welcome to TechSpot! I'll help with the malware.

First, you are running multiple antivirus programs: AV: AntiVir Desktop,
AV: *On-access scanning {84B5EE75-6421-4CDE-A33A-DD43BA9FAD83}>> McAfee and
AV: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition

You need to get this down to one AV program and if a firewall is included, only 1 FW. Decide which you want to keep and here are removal tools to help with the removals:
  • Start> Settings> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs (Windows 2000/ XP) or Start - Control Panel - Uninstall a program (Windows Vista / 7)
  • Wait for the list of installed programs to load, then click the name of the Avira program.
  • Click Remove next to the program's name (Windows 2000 / XP) or in the menu above the list (Windows Vista / 7).
  • Press Yes, to confirm the removal and then OK.
  • . Click Next until Finish. The software is removed.
Please reboot the computer when finished.
==========================================
I also note that you have 2 Firefox browsers running. It would be better to use tabs instead of launching FF twice.
======================================
It appears that you have a rootkit in the MBR. Please run the following:
Download Bootkit Remover and save to your Desktop
  1. You then need to extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracting RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can use 7-Zip: http://www.7-zip.org/
  2. After extracting remover.exe to your Desktop, double-click on remover.exe to run the program (Vista/7 users,right click on remover.exe and click Run As Administrator.
  3. You will see a Black screen with some data on it.
  4. Right click on the screen and click Select All.
  5. Press CTRL+C to Copy
  6. Open a Notepad and press CTRL+V to Paste.
  7. Include the report in your next post.

=======================================
You can uninstall HijackThis 2.0.2. This is an outdated version. I will have you run the current version later and will give you a link.
=========================================
When you have finished the above please download ComboFix from Here and save to your Desktop.

  • [1]. Do NOT rename Combofix unless instructed.
    [2].Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    [3].Close any open browsers.
    [4]. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts to run.
  • NOTE: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If it does not, restart your computer to restore your connection.
    [5]. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    [6]. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always allow.
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    [7]. A report will be generated after the scan. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: Make sure you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix..

Important!Please do not use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you, unless I direct you to. Do not use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.

Thanks so much for such a speedy response! Here are my new logs.

Program version: 1.2.0.0
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

System volume is \\.\C:
\\.\C: -> \\.\PhysicalDrive0 at offset 0x00000000`02738a00

Size Device Name MBR Status
--------------------------------------------
54 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Controlled by rootkit!

Boot code on some of your physical disks is hidden by a rootkit.
To disinfect the master boot sector, use the following command:
remover.exe fix <device_name>
To inspect the boot code manually, dump the master boot sector:
remover.exe dump <device_name> [output_file]

Done;
Press any key to quit...

I am still getting the registry defender pop-up, and my computer will not allow me to post on this forum. It must know the end is coming.

Again, thanks so much for the help!

For the MBR Rootkit:
  • Open Notepad
  • Copy and paste the text in the codebox into Notepad:
    Code:
    @ECHO OFF
    START
    remover.exe fix \.\PhysicalDrive0
    EXIT
  • Go File > Save As
  • Save as Type choose All Files
  • For File Name type fix.bat
  • Save In> choose Desktop
  • Save
  • Double click to Run fix.bat
(You may see a black box appear; this is normal.)

Run remover.exe again and post its output.

Do NOT reboot computer!
========================================
[/b]Please confirm that your antivirus program is AV: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition *On-access scanning enabled*[/b]
There are still entries for multiple AV programs. I can move those in the script you will run through Combofix, but first need to verify the AV.

Also, please be sure the AV and other security is disabled if a program scan directs you to disable. Combofix states: [2].Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
But you show AV: Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated)

One more thing: it appears that you are a student at Baylor. Do you have an Intranet set up there with other Baylor students? Did you set up the 19 entries in Trusted Zone: baylor.edu?
Additionally, these are also in the Trusted Zone:
Trusted Zone: microsoft.com\go
Trusted Zone: microsoft.com\update
Trusted Zone: microsoft.com\v4.windowsupdate
Trusted Zone: microsoft.com\v5.windowsupdate
Trusted Zone: microsoft.com\v6.windowsupdate
Trusted Zone: microsoft.com\WindowsUpdate
Trusted Zone: yahoo.com\launch
Trusted Zone: yahoo.com\music

They do not need to be in this zone. There is lower security in this zone and you don't need any Domains theere, unless you have the Intranet set up at school.

To remove from trusted Zone: Access Internet Options- through Tools in IE or in the Control Panel> Security tab> Trusted Sites> Sites> Highlight and remove all of the Domains you don't need (which would be all except 'baylor' if there is an intranet. It appears that the school uses multiple servers.

Note: These are legitimate entries- just unnecessary.

OK I uninstalled Symantec because it was giving me some trouble, and installed Avira again. I deleted all those trusted sites, just to be sure. I saved that code and ran it, but didn't know what to do once the box opened up. And here's the input from remove.exe

Am I supposed to type "remover.exe" into the black box? Because when I do that it tells me that's invalid.
If I just run the remover program, here is what I get

Is this what you did?
* Double click to Run fix.bat

(You may see a black box appear; this is normal.)

Run remover.exe again and post its output.

If so you did it right.

  • Download the file TDSSKiller.zip and save to the desktop.
    (If you are unable to download the file for some reason, then TDSS may be blocking it. You would then need to download it first to a clean computer and then transfer it to the infected one using an external drive or USB flash drive.)
  • Right-click the tdsskiller.zip file> Select Extract All into a folder on the infected (or potentially infected) PC.
  • Double click on TDSSKiller.exe. to run the scan
  • When the scan is over, the utility outputs a list of detected objects with description.
    The utility automatically selects an action (Cure or Delete) for malicious objects.
    The utility prompts the user to select an action to apply to suspicious objects (Skip, by default).
  • Select the action Quarantine to quarantine detected objects.
    The default quarantine folder is in the system disk root folder, e.g.: C:\TDSSKiller_Quarantine\23.07.2010_15.31.43
  • After clicking Next, the utility applies selected actions and outputs the result.
  • A reboot might require after disinfection.

Post log in next reply.

Yep, it found something, and I quarantined it. Here's the log:
