Recovery disks won't work on HP Pavillion

when i use my recovery disks for hp pavillion it freezes up it gets to the part where it says preparing comp for use then my monitor shuts off he is windows 7

How old is this system and is it still under warrenty?

What has been happening that prompted the use of the recovery disk in the first place?
