Networking setup

i have a server, a monitor, a laptop, cables and connectors and a copy of microsoft server 2008. can someone help me or guide me where to look to learn how to connect all of this together and set up the old laptop for a new user?

Thank you so much Dustin, as you can tell I am new to computers, and I want to learn it all but learn best by hands on trial and error. So work let me bring all this older equipment home to give it a go. I'll check out the links right now. Thanks again.
