Counterstrike - Why is my latency (ping) high and jumps

Hiya,
I have tried many times to gt counterstrike workin and now i have managed to get online and play BUT i have a problem!
My ping Should be around 30 because i have braodband but it jumps from thirts to about 300 all the time and makes it impossible to play!
Please help me!

Are you joining servers that are closest to you? Have you tried to ping an outside site near to your location to see what it returns?
What i am thinking is that you need to reset your modem. (if using DSL) I have seen this a million times, turn it off, leave it for about a minute and boot it again. Hope that helps!

i've had the same problem before when somehow my rates got altered. type net_graph 3 in your console.. see if your getting any choke.. if you are then it's probably your rates.. you can search on google to find reasonable rates for your modem. i have a cable modem and i have my rate set to 25000 and i get no choke, hope that helps
