Lap top dies but need to access data from harddrive

My Dell Inspirion 1000 went dead. The power supply jack gave way.. so am unable to charge the battery or run the computer though the power supply...So in effect the laptop is dead..

Is there a way I can access data from my harddrive by using my USB drive / other ports?
OR
Is there a way I can charge the battery through the USB ports?

I do have my old laptop IBM A20 (in case you would like to suggest some hook ups) I need the data off my old computer to complete my assignments and cannot wait for a replacement battery to arrive...

Any suggestions appreciated..

Thanks,

System specs
no way to run without power
cheap way to go get yourself a ide notebook hard drive adapter
take the plastic case apart that holds the drive hook up to reg pc
you can check they may make a notebook drive adapter to usb
that way you don't have to get into another machine
