There's an IRC channel at irc.starchat.net, #3dspotlight, but during the last year or two it has been pretty much dead (there are users but no one talks), at least every time I'm there. Maybe that explains it, I don't know.

You are just there at the wrong time. Just about anytime between 7PM and Midnight Central time there are some people active.
