Why is my game telling me that it can't initialize the base sound service?

When I launch the warcraft 3 demo it tells me that it can't initialize the base sound service..? why is it telling me this and what can I do about it?
 
uuhhh

hi.... could someone help me here cuz my sound doesn't work.... I have a sound caard in but.... well I dunno how to get it to work.
 
Take a look in device manager. Are there any yellow exclamation or question marks next to your audio devices.

Have you tried reinstalling the sound drivers for you card?

Is it only this game where you have no sound, or is it that you have no sound at all?
