I installed it last night. Its been cleaned up considerably and has an almost "Windows XP" look and feel. Should be lot easier to configure hardware and configure software settings. So far a couple of problems but I barely looked at it so in time I am sure that I will iron everything out.

I really like the improved desktop. Hopefully the KDE and Gnome development groups take note and "clean up" their respective desktops. It was great to find that it configured my SoundBlaster 16 without me having to recompile the kernel to add OSS support like I had to in 7.3. The lack of MP3 support is a pain though. Overall, I think Linux may finally be getting somewhere!

Kudos to XMMS for having the guts to provide mp3 support for xmms in RH8.0. Lame move on Red Hat's part, in my opinion. Follow the link from the xmms homepage: http://www.xmms.org/ for your mp3 support!
Xine, where are you? Still no Java, Macromedia Flash, Real Player, or Xmovie either. Oh well, maybe they'll see the light of supporting the home user one of these years or decades...still a crap load of stuff that needs to be loaded for decent home use. I guess you can only fit so much in a 2.5GB install. I like RH8.0 better than 7.3 but Linux still needs a lot of work to be a viable OS for John Doe user. I really didn't expect much improvement in that area. MY2CW |
