Half life 2 crashes when starting video

Hi-- just purchased HL2 for my PC. When I launch the game, i get the the first part of the video, but then the game crashes when I get to the second part of the video. I'm not sure why this is happening. Im running a amd 2200+ with a geforce 4 ti4600. I updated the drivers to my vid. card, and downloaded the newest version of directx.-- Anyone have any ideas or know why this is happening?

edit- the error message is--

Failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults

Game will now restart with the new video settings.

The game does restart, to the same error message..

Did you remove the old graphics card drivers before you installed the new ones. If you didn't, download the new one again, but don't install it. Remove all traces of other graphics card drivers through the control panel and My Computer. Restart and then install the new drivers, then restart again. I understand that you updated the drivers after the errors, but the same thing might have happedned with a previous driver update, it just hasn't shown itself 'til now.
It's got to be something to do with your graphics card, I'm not an expert but some one here will know what to do.
