ok i have a big problem with my networking .. im new to this whole networking thing though so please forgive me if i sound newbie.

my network was working perfectly before though so i know im using the right cables and everything but heres the problem:

recently my little brother got a new comp and i formatted my drive so we both used a formatted harddrive and installed win xp pro. we use verizon DSL for an internet connection and a 3com hub(which is extremely old) well .. i tried to set up the network using the xp wizard thing on both comps. we can file share and both go online. but heres the thing.. we get disconnected from the internet when he tries to play a file from my comp and vice versa. and when we're both online at the same time we would get disconnected a lot more than usual. but everything ran smoothly before we formatted the drives because we had a professional help us set up the network. our collision light blinks a lot too when we're both connected.

maybe i didnt set up the network right or my hub is dying and should get a new one?


for the xp networking wizard i clicked these in the following order:
"set up a home or small office network"
"This computer connects to the internet through a residential gateway or through another computer on the network"
then i typed in my comp name and workgroup name
"turn on file and printer sharing"


im not too sure about the problem so please help.
and feel free to ask for more details if needed .. i really wanna get my comps networked properly.

You cannot share an internet connection using a hub. You can share the internet connection if you have a router or a computer functioning as such.

but ive been using this hub for the past 5 years for both comps to connect online......

Ok.. So maybe you have a router and not a hub? Can you tell the difference?

Post the network settings on both of the computers, the exact kind of internet connection you have and the make/model of that hub thing.

You can get the network settings by running "ipconfig /all" on the command line.

yea its a hub its the 3com home network ethernet hub 10Mbps 5 port hub

and for some reason everytime i type in ipconfig the dos window would turn on but shut off right away, can't read what it says at all

Open a new command prompt windows yourself to keep it open.

Where is the hub conncted to besides the two computers? What is the make and model of that gadget?

Well, if someone personally hates you then they know your public IP address and could attack you. But then again you could be hit by a random attack at any time anyway. As long as your systems are up to date and have firewalls installed you should be OK. And your IP may change when you reboot your computer anyway.

So how exactly do you connect to the internet? I see both computers have PPP adapters configured.. Do you have your hub plugged into your DSL modem and you "dial" the DSL connection?

I see your ethernet interfaces have been set to automatically obtain IP addresses and they have failed in doing that. You should assign them IP addresses manually either from the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x range. Make sure the subnet masks match.

Your hub runs at 10Mbits and half duplex. Ethernet speed autonegotiation system is far from perfect and it is absolutely horrible with gigabit interfaces. You should go and set the link speed and duplex manually for your network cards in Device Manager.

yea they both connect to the hub which is connected to our dsl modem and we both have to dial up to it

and would using another nic be effective also or would it have the same outcome?

because my mother board has 2 ethernet ports but one is disabled
and my bros comp has 2 also and we also have spare lan cards.

And Verizon actually lets you log in using the same username from both of the computers at the same time? If this works OK for you then you are really lucky.

You set the network cards to 10Mbit/s and half duplex.

You're using an APIPA scheme for Lan IP addressing. You need a Router, it will solve all your problems. Linksys is what I reccomend.

I think somebodys gotten lucky with the setup
on the one nic make the dns primary 1 number and the other primary
the other dns number
keep the gateway to 192.168.1.1 the hub may use this as a gateway
the hub should havea port on back that says WAN
on it thats the one to the modem the modem may have a built in router single port
the issue may be that verizon see's a conflict with the connection softwares
this is not realyl a dialer as there is no number that gets dialed up
it uses a pppoe setup with your user name and password
as stated the easyest way best way around issue is a router that uses firmaware to do the pppoe you then do away with the badly written verzon software
