legalities involving mp3s and other files

I read in the newspaper about a girl who was fined £9000 for downloading some music on Kazaa. And i was wondering how they found out were she lived, i dont know much about all this stuff but it confused me as to how anyone acctually found out where she lived.

Does this happen with other stuff? Is it just Kazaa? i pay for my music over an mp3 site, how does my ISP know that ive downloaded it leagally?

I just wanted someone to fill in the gaps.

They know, because the site you are downloading from is registered as a legal site. Don't worry, you are safe.
