Last week, in a small step towards IM interoperability, we found out that AOL's new instant messenger will be compatible with ICQ. Now, in a move that will hopefully lay the foundation for further IM compatibility, the Internet Engineering Task Force has approved an instant messaging standard.
The new standard, called the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), is backed by the folks behind the open source Jabber instant messenger. Hopefully, in time, this new standard will help IM software from all manufacturers play nicely together.
