wel I got it again.

last time was when I updated windows XP

this time right after cleaning my programs.

I removed a dozen programs so I can't figure which one caused the error.

So this time it's not because of windows update, it means my last solution of removing the updates won't work, I need to find something else!

Bad Directsound Driver 88780078

After much cussing and hair pulling I went through the directx 9.0 troubleshooter. When it came to sound, it said "No sound card installed" or something like that.

I then went to the device manager (windows and break key simultaneously) clicked on hardware, device manager, sound video and game controllers. (I have the Asus a7n8x 2.0 board with amd 2500+ cpu. It has built in Nvidia sound.)

Then I right clicked each item related to audio and clicked properties. When I got to "Nvidia Nforce Audio Codec Interface" and clicked on properties, under Device Status, it said "No drivers installed".

I then clicked on the Drivers tab, Update Driver, Install from a list or specific location. Then clicked on Don't search, I will choose the driver to install. Then you will have a driver(s) to select from. I only had one and clicked Next. Had to insert the Nvidia disk that came with the Motherboard. It installed the drivers and that fixed the problem.

In the bios, I have APIC enabled. Some have said that this is often a culprit. I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. I upgraded to directx 9 before this all started so it may have deleted the driver. Don't know but it worked after installing the driver

SOLUTION!!!!!!

Hello People!
I found the solution for the --> Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration.
Error code: 88780078 problem

But so for it fixes ONLY Your WINAMP!!!

Go to Options/Preferences/Plug-ins - Outoput. There You will see that Direct Sound Output v.2.2.x . Select it, click Configure, and choose another device in there. (It will be Your sound card)
Click Apply.....and enjoy Your sound....
However....Windows still will tell You that there is no sound device. Strange stuff!
Please post Your results....and any progress.....

Cheers.....

WORKED FAST for me. my soundcard (ESS 1788) was already highlighted so I picked the other option: Primary Sound Driver and went back to playing a file. I think Winamp crashed then, so I rebooted. Heard the MS opening sound. Opened Winamp, played a file and lo! My sound was back then. I looked at Options/Preferences/Plug-ins Output/DirectSound/Configure just to check and somehow the option selected was ESS 1788 Direct Sound Driver.

Mind you, jsut before I did that, I had been installing some DSP plugins just in case they would somehow install proper drivers along. And Had not rebooted yet. So that might part of it. Seems the only one I successfully installed is Enhancer 0.17. I did open the AdaptX v35 package but it is not present in my DSP plugins list.

Hope this can help.

Error code: 88780078--I have fixed the problem completly

I'm not quite sure how old these posts are but I figure that if I am stumbling across it now. 10-03-03, then there are others with the same dilema. I corrected the problem by:
1. Shutting my PC down
2. Removing the card
3. Booting into windows
4. Shutting down again
5. Replacing the card

Windows recognized the card (Soundblaster Live!5.1) and I installed the drivers and everything works like normal. I encountered this problem after reinstalling WinXP so that seems to be the common denominator. Hope this helps, please post back if it does. Peace.

I have had the Bad DirectSound driver problem / Error code: 88780078 for quite a white now... I read this big topic about it and nothing here solved my problem
Now I finally solved it YEAH. I hope this can solve some of yours.
Well this was the problem, ... just to make sure. When I tryed to play a mp3 in WinAmp it said:
"Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in cofiguration. Error code: 88780078"
After I read kosta's reply I could play mp3 fine... but still no windows sound...
Here is what I did: Go to Windows Media Player -> Tools -> Options -> Devices -> Speakers -> Properties -> Choose you sound card in "Audio device to use" (SB Live! for me) press Advanced -> Enable Windows Sound -> restart Windows .. tadaa sound again
I belive you can do it in a simple way too...... I don't know... this worked for me...

After searching the web for hours I finally found a link to some alternate WDM drivers for cards that support them.

Quote:
The kX Project is an independent development project, focused on providing free WDM Audio Drivers for kX-Compatible sound cards. Read our Mission statement for a quick introduction.

The kX Audio Driver is an independent WDM (Windows Driver Model) driver for all EMU10K1 and EMU10K2-based soundcards manufactured by Creative Technology Ltd. and/or E-mu Systems Inc., including the SoundBlaster Live! series, the E-mu Audio Production Studio (APS) card, and the Audigy / Audigy2 series of cards.
Anyway I downloaded the drivers, removed the hardware from the device manager, reboot, installed Kx Audio drivers, heard some sound, reboot, and have sound upon reboot.

Here is a link to the site hope it helps some of you.

I did it! I had tried all the things you said to no avail. I unistalled my driver through device mangager, then went to add/remove hardware. It found my sound card and I double clicked on the sound card. I then went to properties, audio devices, clicked on my sound card then properties again and clicked on Use audio features on this device. Now sound works! It was pure luck that I found this and I was afraid that i'd have to install windows again.

Wow.This topic keeps coming up again and again.I wonder...We must be able to form a whole community if gathered guys.I have the same problem.Winamp comes up with a "Bad DirectSound ... 8878000A" message and Windows Media Player doesn't produce sound.I am using Windows 98SE and a Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64V soundcard.

Had the same problem before, too.Just did a fresh reinstallation after formatting and, surprise, the problem comes up again. The whole problem is too complex to sescribe now.I 'll just mention i had it for months, trying to solve it.I was hoping the format will fix it but it seems that i 'll have to deal with it somehow. It seems it has something too do with a mix of DirectSound drivers and DirectX.Don't know exactly though.I am downloading the latest drivers for my soundcard now and the kX Project's program.I 'll post again if i have new information.

I just got this problem to day when using Winamp 5.02. I have XP and onboard sound. I have tried everything in this post and many other suggestions.

The problem came out of no where. I didnt undate/install any new drivers or service packs or anything it just came out of no where. This is the only forum i could find where people acctually tried to help. So any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Also every time I reboot my comp I get a message about new hardware, a "Multimedia Audio Controller" I think this may have something to do with the problem.
