Usb External Hard Drive Problem

hi i'm using xp-pro and when i hook up my external hard drive which is a maxtor 6y120lo xp says it finds it installes drivers then it says its installed but will not work properly and want me to remove it what is my next move help please

Have you partitioned and formatted that drive yet ? ?
If not Windows will not recognise it.
You can use the Maxtor utilities that shipped with the drive.

don't have orginal softwere for drive to format or pattition drive any ideas were i can get that
