As the Ubuntu installation notes say in plain English, the installer will resize your existing partitions to make room for Ubuntu.

well i tried Ubuntu, the partitioning thing in there is dodgy as anything. I already made some raw data using Partition Magic, then it took me like 30mins to work it out, but not only that, ubuntu wouldnt read off my cd/dvd combo drive so i had to get an old one. After working out how to install it, the ubuntu installer froze at about 10% into the installation and then when i rebooted my windows partition was stuffed and would not boot, i had to restore and lost all the data on my C:\ partition.

just make sure you know what your doing first.
