What is your motherboard make/model? What card are you going to put in?

Most of the newer motherboards make the changes for you automatically upon installing a new one.

The typical strategy is as follows:

After downloading newest drivers from your new card maker's website and saving them somewhere on your hard dies, and before installing new card

1. Reboot comp in safe mode and go into device manager. Remove the display adapter drivers.
2. Shut off computer and install new card
3. Connect monitor to new card
4. Boot directly into bios and check for "init display device" or something to that effect. Change it from onboard to PCI or AGP (whatever the case may be for your situation).
5. Reboot into windows and it should auto-detect new hardware.
6. Install downloaded drivers.

good post. remeber to have proper antistatic protection.nothing fries hardware faster than static electricity.Another thing is to check the wattage of your powersupply. if its too low, the mahine will run into problems.
