el data cable mod question

Hi,
Ive put some el data cables in my pc and they look good but id like them to flash with data transfer.

Problem is that the el wire is powered from the 12v rail and the hdd activity led is only 3v.

Anyone know of a way to step up the hdd voltage or how to use a transistor to do the job. I have a few bc547's, would one of those do it?

Cant quite get my head around it, i think the hdd activity works by switching the negative side of the led but i'm not 100% on that. I assume that running the negative from the hdd activity into the el inverter with a +12v will blow my mobo???

Any help will be gratefully received.
Thanx in advance, Rik.

I want to run them from the mobo hdd activity. I have 2 ata hdd's and 2 optical drives.

The el data cables came from a friend who ordered them from a catalogue he got from his dad so i have no link to them.
