153,000 Times Faster Than Modem

SNGX1275 posted this bit of news yesterday in the forums and while it dates back to Tuesday, I thought it would still be worth a post... this ain't no 100x faster browser . The complete article can be read here.

Scientists have developed a new data transfer protocol for the Internet fast enough to download a full-length DVD movie in less than five seconds, the California Institute of Technology said today.
The protocol is called FAST, standing for Fast Active queue management Scalable Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

The researchers achieved a speed of 8,609 megabits per second (Mbps) by using 10 simultaneous flows of data over routed paths, the largest aggregate throughput ever accomplished in such a configuration, Caltech said in a news release. "That is 153,000 times that of today's modem and close to 6,000 times that of the common standard for ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) connections."

If we can get a handle on the spam and adware problem, then this will be even better news.

Actually talking about the latest technology is bullsh@t, until it is offordable and available for consumers.

even nowadays, there are also very fast optical fibres. but can home users afford that?

100mbps right onto the internet? You have got the be kidding me, that would be the same as 12,5MB per second if you was alone in there...

You could download a 650mb ISO file in 52 seconds through that connection!!!
