The best possible? Well, when i think of the best a few things come to mind on the spot..

Dual 7900 GTX VC's in SLI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130280 (2)

AMD FX60 Dual Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103608

4 Gigs of Premium Corsair RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145509 (2)

X-Fi Elite Audio
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102191

Asus SLI dual X16 Lanes
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131568

Seagate 750 GIG HDD SATA 3.0 Gbps
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148134 (2-4)

Some case you like (with insane amount of cooling of course) and..

Crazy Powerful PSU to power all that..
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703004

And there's not much else I can think off. You might want to add some non-stock fans, maybe a Liquid Cooling system but those aren't really my strong point's.

And if your strictly for gaming, not much Multitasking, I'v heard the FX-57 actually get's better Frame rates in some games.

aaaand your total comes to $4000. Will that be cash or cheque?
Seriously, you would spend that much on a computamatator???
Get a car or something

haha

just some things to consider...

this really isn't the time to build the "ultimate PC" because next generation CPUs and video cards are about to come out in the next few months.

1. Intel Conroe core CPUs and AMD socket M2 CPUs will be released in a few months.

2. DirectX10 games are already in the works, and since there is currently no full DX10 compliant video card out yet, you're nice new DX9 cards will not be able to run them when they are released (in 2007 i presume?)

3. it would not be the "ultimate PC" without a dedicated physics processor

Yeah, he's right.

Waiting would be a very, very good idea.

I know I am.

You're missing out on the ultimate performance HDD:

Gigabyte iRAM. The fastest HDD you can ever get on the market today. Think: 10 sec Windows boot time
http://www.pccasegear.com/prod3234.htm

Only costs you AUD$250. Ram seperate

that iRAM thing seems like a cool idea, but it's just not practical.

although the transfer speed would be awesome, i think the performance benefits would be outweighed by the lack of sufficient storage.

isn't the maximum storage 4GB? (4 x 1GB RAM sticks)?

it would be nice to run the operating system on it though

If I had an i-RAM, *drools*, I won't bother having the operating system on it. Probably put an application I use often on it instead. Adobe reader definately goes on that thing.

The 4gb capacity does cause a problem, especially since most applications take up more than that these days....

Lets add more supercomponents to the mix.
http://www.sharbor.com/products/MTXN5300013.html
bundle that with 2x19" monitors, and you'll be a pretty happy gamer.

But if you want the biggest, most kickass component, thats the best, and you might want dual 150gb raptors in RAID-0 to complement that for extra storage space. Add another couple of 750gb HDDs in RAID-0, and you got the most kickass PC storage system ever. Not to mention just blew 3-4k just on storage, but I guarantee there's not going to be a PC that'll outperform your PC for some time.

Lets also add that you might want to install TECs + watercool combo on all that.

and your bill comes up closer to 10k for this monster of a comp.

If i was to put anything on the iRAM drive, it would be the operating system only. I think this is where you would see the best performance overall.

I more or less NEVER shutdown the comp, so I wouldn't put the OS there. Would be totally pointless. Probably put word and excel there as well. And the latest game I'm playing. Windows Media Player?

OS is a fine idea if you shutdown and restart the computer alot...

Or you could go to this link and get the PC they're selling. U get to choose most of the components but the FX-60, Quad SLI 7900s & PSU are standard.

Lol.

I never ever see any company offer very top of the line computers. Sure, they offer the fastest CPU, fastest GPU... sometimes even the fastest RAM, but usually thats where it stops. Thats because the general community only looks at those.

In fact, the very middle of the consumer market only looks at CPU mhz.

Besides, this current "monster comp" we're describing nobody in their right mind will buy. Unless they've got too much spare cash of course. 4 gb of premium RAM? Even if you needed 4gb, the performance difference between the very best, and something alightly above average is minimal.

i-RAM? Sure, the thing speeds up data access really fast, but you're looking at 50% lower average loading times at best.

X-Fi Elite audio? I can't think of any scenario where anyone will pay for the best soundcard on the market. Anyone who needs this high end sound will not be using the PC for their sound needs, or would've gone for professional product lines.

But as the first post said, we're just creating something where budget is NOT a consideration at all, so alienware probably doesn't have a place in this thread

I'm just ranting, don't take it personally

Lol....

I just have something personal against company made PCs. My first real comp was a compaq, which gave me a thousand problems throughout its life. Given that its customer service back in Malaysia was horrendous (most customer service centres are), I had a very bad experience.

I'd say I am scarred for my life. I'll never buy a "branded" computer ever.

Besides, I'm only after the good stuff, my goal everytime I build a comp is to be able to play the latest games (even on mind graphics) for the next 5-7 years. Branded comps can give you that, but at a huge cost.

I never shut my computer down either. Windows XP starts up fast anyways. I wouldn't really care about the load time, it's not important.

You apparently think that the only time the operating system uses the hard drive is when it starts up... lol

putting programs on it would have minimal effect, because most of them run from RAM once they load

I would say you are right about what I think.

But not entirely true.

But so I don't sound like a complete fool, maybe you'd like to share with us when else does the OS use the HDD.

Having programs on a fast HDD helps in starting up the program.

I think my knowledge of the uses of HDDs is a little shallow.... To me its just where I dump all my data, and the faster I can access it, the better it is for me.
