Red hat fadora core 5--got it installed. Now What?
I D/L'd the 6 cd, latest ver, did the media check and then installed.
All went very well! Works like a champ!

Until I logged in----update took a long time but went well too.
The linux box is connected to Inet., see's other computers on the local network
but nothing can see it. Tried setting up smb folder/visible made no change.

My intent is to have local webserver with all the bells and whistles for web dev.
apache
mysql
php 4 & 5
perl
I'm building mostly php sites.
I have Xampp to install but don't know how.

I'm just sick of XP and having to upload every change I make ftp to site to test (which takes site offline) I have linux hosting.

Am I looking at another distro or a fedora dummy's book?

Thank you

I'd say the first thing you should look at is the firewall configuration on your Fedora machine. The easiest way to install most things in Fedora is to use Yum. Just type:
yum install package-name
if you know the name of the package you want to install. Is there something specific you need from Xampp? Most of those features can be installed with the standard FC5 CDs.

Thank you LNCPapa

Samba & smb was the solution for network.....it blue screened my Xp!
but got it to work.
Still trying to figure out the yum part but decided not to use xampp,
fedora came with the cutting edge newest release of everything..
Apache
php 5
Mysql
phpadmin

The night mare for this linux noob was: configuring access and permissions to the right accounts.
Finding where to input commands was very hard but found the terminal to do it.
Go figure , I didn't know, linux does not have a registery!
If I get it right it's all .ini files..
In the end I know have a very nice webserver in house for website developing.

Xampp is an awesome free program for use in Xp! So I may setup yet another web server Xp pro/Xampp.
Fedora loves the p4 2.4 1g ram.
I'm cookin with fire now!:hotbounce

Thank you!!!

Yes - config files are usually stored in .conf files and sometimes in .ini (I haven't seen many of the latter)
