SGI to lay off 10 percent of staff

High-end computer maker Silicon Graphics Inc. said Thursday that it plans to cut 400 jobs, or 10 percent of its workforce, in an effort to return to profitability.

An SGI representative said employees were being notified about the cuts on Thursday. She said layoffs would take place companywide and that marketing and administrative positions would be hardest hit, while sales and engineering departments would be least affected.

Well, I can see why. I've dealt with SGI machines first hand, and I flat out was not impressed. It is pretty sad when an SGI machine running at the same speed as a AMD Duron that I had in college, when the SGI machine had 1 gig of RAM and my machine had 64MB of RAM.. my machine was faster. Sounds crazy but its the truth. I ran 3D Studio Max on both the SGI and my machine and 3DSM ran best on my machine without even a 3D card.. just regular graphics.
