When is the Right Time to Scan...?

First sorry if this is in the wrong section, its my first post and I have some learning to do...

Can any one please tell me when running a scan programme for viruses, Trojans Etc is it better to use the
Scanning programme when….

A. Off line ( no internet connection )
B. On Line ( with internet connection on )
C. Off Line but in Safe Mode

The reason I ask is that ive been running my scan programs while I surf the internet…?
Does it really make any difference when you run a scan..?

It`s Ok to run scans while your surfing,if your system reasonably fast.

If you have reason to believe that there are viruses/spyware on your system

you should run them in safe mode.

You should not need to scan more than once a week,if your careful on the net.

Then post fresh HJT and Ewido logs as attachments into this thread.
